Remember those days of excitedly arriving at school on the first day of term only to realize at your desk that you’d forgotten your pencil box? Although kids can always count on a friendly classmate to lend them a spare pen (if they’re lucky), it’s always better to stock up stationary-wise beforehand for the smoothest first day back possible. Here's our rundown of Shanghai stationery stores for every sort of shopper.

Yours Life Shop

This little place on Julu Lu brings together a fine collection of designer homeware, accessory and clothing items. Check out owner of Kǎrd Stationery Victoria Rushton’s elegant black and white notebooks that come with minimalist Chinese patterns.

The Mix Place

This one is for the design-conscious kids out there. Their notebook collection is impressive and includes entire shelves of classic and limited-edition Moleskins as well as unique designs by Owspace Studio. If you’re a fan of the Power Station of Art’s conceptual designs, The Mix Place also retails its stationery products.

DAISO

DAISO’s our stationary go-to for cheap and cheerful. With everything priced at an affordable 10RMB, you can get most items here, from plain notepads and packs of ink pens to wrapping paper and gift bags. The quality is not the best, but will suffice as long as you’re not picky.

Shanghai Culture Commercial Centre

This ground-floor marketplace is definitely a spot for nabbing general items and art supplies for a bargain. You can find almost anything from canvases, palettes and brushes to ink pens by Zebra, Sakura and Pentel.

MUJI

The name in Japanese literally means ‘no label’, and this applies to the general aesthetics of stationery products you might find here. Plain and lined notebooks can be found in a variety of sizes as well as sturdy ringed notepads. Recommended if you’re looking for all kinds of items under one roof.
