Given that everything in the room is controlled by an iPad – lights, TV, room service, curtains, the lot – the achingly hip Andaz is basically your granny’s worst nightmare. Once you’ve got the hang of opening your blinds via touchscreen, you can enjoy the room for all its bells and whistles: the bathtub lights up in a variety of colours, and the toilet is one of those fancy Japanese-style electronic ones that heats your bum, shoots jets of water up it and then flushes and closes itself.

Aside from all the gadgets, the Andaz is stylish, comfortable and fabulously located – you’re likely to have a nice view of the neighbouring Xintiandi development with all the area’s shops, bars and restaurants within walking distance. Considering the size of the hotel, we appreciate the communal vibe they’ve tried to create in reception with free all-day tea, coffee, soft drinks and snacks available; while the interiors pay tribute to the city’s thriving modern art scene.

Rates from 1,040RMB (plus 15 percent service charge).
