Get the super juicy, slightly spicy Manwich mantou bun burger with great hand-cut fries, and come weekend brunch time the six-spiced chicken and waffle with jujube honey is a definite don’t-miss.

Co. Cheese is the city’s first dedicated grilled cheese restaurant serving more than 20 varieties of the kid-friendly sammie. Good luck choosing just one of the toasty grilled cheeses on offer. But if we really have to choose, we rate the tuna melt and the chicken breast grilled cheese.

Included in this year’s Michelin Guide, find a wide variety of burgers with grass-fed beef at Beef & Liberty at Shanghai Center. Decor is all warehouse chic, with brushed concrete walls and angular metal chairs in bright primary colours.

Do and See
The family-friendly and free Jingan Sculpture Park is filled with fountains and currently about 20 pieces of public art (come autumn, special exhibits will bring over new works). Shanghai’s Natural History Museum is also located on the park grounds and is worth the trip to visit more than 10,000 artefacts from all seven continents.

This basement art centre houses hundreds of original propaganda posters from the early days of the founding of the PRC. Although small, it gives an absorbing insight into China’s recent history, often ignored by the bigger museums, and is a definite must-see for Shanghai residents and visitors alike. The gift shop is also a worthwhile stop, selling original and reproduction prints of many of the posters on display.
