Over the past year, homegrown record label and music
collective Eating Music has played an instrumental part in
Shanghai’s vinyl revival. Executive producer and founder, Cookie
Zhang, conceived of the project after a trip to LA to attend Low
End Theory – a beat-based club night known for resisting the
branding and superficiality of mainstream electronic music
culture. With Eating Music, Zhang hoped to create something
similar: a project that prioritised music over image and resisted
a homogeneous soundscape.
This easily piggybacked off Daily
Vinyl – her appointment-only record store/mixspace turned Taobao
shop, known to sell obscure wax pressings from Asia and beyond.
Although an embryonic time for the label, 2018 proved to be a busy,
productive year; alongside regular showcases at Yona Café, the
label put out Eating Music Campilation Vol. 1 – a compilation album
forged out of their first summer label camp. To celebrate this year’s
Spring Festival, the label released Eating with Friends, an eight-track
download which features producers from across four continents.

tracks, plus a pair of handmade bamboo chopsticks engraved
with the label’s insignia (click here to buy). Eating Music x Beatween are bringing the
post-disco and hip hop producer Mndsgn to Shanghai this week (Sat 23) for
a live set at Arkham. There is a lot in store for Zhang and her music
universe moving forward, and for us, by default
