One of the first hotels in Pudong, Purple Mountain opened over 20 years ago and is starting to show its age. Location-wise, it's just a stone's throw from Century Avenue metro station and Plaza 96 shopping mall. Though a self-billed 'international' hotel, it serves a largely Chinese and Japanese business clientele which is reflected in the limited English spoken by staff.

Dining options include a branch of Quan Ju De, the famous Peking duck restaurant (easily identifiable by the monstrous, oversized model duck at the entrance), a dark and rather uninspiring buffet style restaurant serving a range of Western and Asian food from dated silver tureens (there's even a sign at the entrance asking diners to 'Please line up', suggesting a school canteen style scrum at mealtimes) and a Japanese bistro featuring classic sushi, sashimi and teppanyaki, which looks like the best of the bunch. There's a good range of recreational activities available, including Pudong's biggest outdoor pool complete with terrace and 'Poolside Stars' bar, a newly upgraded fitness centre housing state-of-the-art Star Trac running machines, plus ping pong and mahjong rooms.
All 368 guest rooms are located above the 25th floor, affording sweeping views of Pudong. Standard rooms are good-sized and quiet, with calm cream decor and high speed broadband access.

Standard rooms from 1,265RMB/night, including service charge.
